The best beach hotels in Portugal

Advice

All hotels have been independently reviewed and selected. We will earn a commission if you book via the links below, but this never affects our rating.

Portugal has many strengths, but its beaches must be its standout draw. Not only for the dizzying choice and variety along its long coastline but also for their exceptional quality and cleanliness. Is it any wonder that the majority of Portuguese spend every minute of their free time at the praia, happy to lunch on the warm bola de Berlim doughnuts that boys bring, in boxes, weaving deftly through the crowds.

If you’d rather make forays to the beach than stay all day, here is a selection of the best beach hotels in Portugal, allowing you to dip in and out of the sands as well as the sea. And while these are in the Algarve, so blessed by its golden beaches, those who want to combine coast with culture should choose somewhere near Silves, the Moorish capital of what was then Al-Gharb (the west) from the 8th to the 13th century.

How we review

Every hotel in this curated list has been visited by one of our expert reviewers, who are usually hosted on a complimentary basis. They stay for a minimum of one night, test at least one meal and trial other experiences that the hotel might have to offer.

Vila Joya

Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal

9
Telegraph expert rating

Set amid flower-filled gardens on cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Vila Joya is the kind of place people don’t want to leave once they’ve checked in. Among the best luxury beach hotels in Portugal, the hotel has the feel of a private villa, with each of its suites individually styled, and at the heart of the property, a sitting room and dining room spilling out onto terraces. The gardens, complete with heated pool, lead down to the beach, and the facilities here are excellent. Listen to the sounds of the ocean in the on-site spa and choose between dining at the two-Michelin-starred restaurant by chef Dieter Koschina or the casual beach shack.
